The Poultry Nutritionist is responsible for performing nutrition-related duties including feed formulations, feed ingredient testing, field research on egg production and shell quality, interacting with employees in various areas of farms management and a liaison with sales and technical staff of vendors in the feed additive industry.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Formulate optimal feed rations for over 100 laying hen/pullet flocks each week for company and contract flocks utilizing Visionary program exclusive to MFI.
Monitor feed ingredients received at mills for nutrient levels and appropriate quality evaluations.
Work with corporate purchasing to evaluate best decisions for major feed ingredient suppliers based upon cost and available nutrient content.
Interact with sales team members (sales/technical) with feed additive companies to consider evaluation feed products for testing or maintaining relationship/updating information with current suppliers.
Participate in team efforts with production manager/supervisors to optimize production/profits.
Maintain communication with feed mill personnel at corporate and contract mill sites.
Work as part of a nutrition team with other nutritionist and feed ingredient procurement to evaluate current and future needs and plans for the nutrition program.
Maintain communication with veterinarian on animal health decisions related to feed ingredients.
Evaluation of production data and shell quality reports to monitor changes needed to optimize the nutrition program for each individual flock.
Plan, conduct (track data) and evaluate field research to test feed additives and nutrient needs utilizing split-row houses on company farms.
Manage 500-bird research house for more intense studies on nutritional evaluations for laying hens. Includes care of birds, feed mixing and record keeping as well as supervision of animal care helpers.
Implement and track action plans for feed cost savings ideas.
Participate in safety and biosecurity training meetings.
Professional development via scientific meetings and nutrition conferences.
Perform other duties as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
pHd or MS in Poultry Nutrition
5 years poultry nutrition experience
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Excellent verbal & written communication skills and presentation skills.
Able to multi-task and solve problems effectively.
Experience in utilizing feed formulation software.
