Executive Director, Miller Poultry Research and Education Center
Auburn University is seeking candidates for Head of the Department of Poultry Science and Executive Director of the Miller Poultry Research and Education Center in the College of Agriculture. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership that upholds the College’s tradition of excellence in teaching, research, extension/outreach, and service. The Head will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Department. The Executive Director will provide leadership for research, education, and extension/outreach conducted at the Charles C. Miller, Jr. Research and Education Center supporting the fast-growing, global poultry industry. The successful candidate will report directly to Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.
Responsibilities: The Department Head provides visionary leadership and overall management of the Department. The Head also serves as the senior faculty administrator and promotes excellence in teaching, research and extension/outreach programs. The position demands performance of professional duties requiring leadership, vision, strategic planning, and decision-making skills in the supervision of departmental programs and personnel. The Head is responsible for recruitment, supervision and evaluation of personnel, department budgets, extramural funding, professional development of faculty and staff, as well as oversight of the departmental facilities that are located on the Auburn University campus. In addition, the Head will serve as an advocate and representative of the department/college interests, needs and programs through active engagement with stakeholders and support of fund raising activities. The Head/Executive Director establishes and fosters working relationships with other departments within the university, commodity groups, agribusiness representatives, governmental and private agencies in addition to students and alumni. The Executive Director will ensure that research, education, and outreach/extension activities supporting the poultry industry are coordinated across all academic units at Auburn University, notably those engaged at the Miller Center. The Executive Director will be accountable for the operations and maintenance of all facilities at the Miller Center and will ensure all programs conducted at the Miller Center meet all state, federal, and university requirements. The Executive Director will work to enhance Auburn University’s reputation in the poultry industry and amongst peer institutions. The successful candidate will maintain a close collaborative working relationship with administrators and staff in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
Qualifications: The candidate must have an earned a PhD from an accredited institution in Poultry Science, Food Science, or related field and a distinguished scholarly record sufficient to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor. The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the breadth and depth of the different internal and external departmental constituencies. He/she must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate that he/she can communicate effectively with faculty, staff, stakeholders, parents and students. In addition, the incumbent must also demonstrate leadership, organizational skills, and have an understanding of sustainability and value-managed growth. The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and/or extension/outreach activities. A demonstrated ability to secure and sustain extramural funding, an understanding of funding agencies and leadership/service activities in professional societies is required. Knowledge and commitment to the unique mission of the Land-Grant University is also required. The Department and Miller Center: Auburn University’s Department of Poultry Science has a long history of making important contributions to the discipline and the poultry industry. Today, the department is poised to take on new leadership. It is equipped with a modern office and laboratory building on Auburn’s campus built in 2004. Just six miles north of the Auburn campus, the department is developing the Charles C. Miller, Jr. Poultry Research and Education Center. Once built, this 35 acre, 15-facility site will feature a research-scaled feed mill and processing plant, several live bird test and production facilities, and a well-equipped teaching and administration building. This project will be completed in August 2020. Nearby, the department is building a new poultry infectious disease facility. The department’s 16 dedicated faculty members support undergraduate and graduate programs in poultry science and food science. Currently, over 100 students are enrolled in these academic programs. The department also enjoys the support from the fast growing Alabama poultry industry, primarily through the support of the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association, which brings all areas of the industry – growers, integrators, and allied industry companies – together.
The Community: Auburn residents enjoy a thriving community, recognized as one of the “best small towns in America,” with moderate climate and easy access to major cities or to beach and mountain recreational facilities. Situated along the rapidly developing I-85 corridor between Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama, the combined Auburn-Opelika-Columbus statistical area has a population of over 500,000, with excellent public school systems and regional medical centers.
